I am super excited to announce: Storytelling 101 is happening this winter! I will be teaching a Moth-style storytelling class for adults at Sweet Tree Arts in Hope in February and March. I’ve been a big fan of The Moth for a long time now. The Moth is all about telling true stories live on stage without notes (stories like this and this and this). But this kind of storytelling goes back to our primal roots, back when we gathered around the fire and every bit of wisdom, history, economics, how-to, and relationship advice came in the form of a story, usually from the elders.
I’ve been digging up fun ways to teach storytelling with interactive games and dusting off my old acting vocal warm-ups. I got so gushy and gooey about it I even wrote a love poem to storytelling (read it if you dare!).
The reason I’m so darn revved up about this class is that it combines so many of my great loves: stories, performance, the truth, memoir, fun groups of people, sweaty palms…wait, take that last one back.
Maybe you love to hear stories and maybe you love to even tell stories, but maaaaybe you need a little guidance on how to do it. Maybe you fumble, mumble, ramble, or just don’t know when or how to stop. Maybe you are just not comfy yet with an audience. Maybe you can’t decide which parts of a story should go in and which should go out.
By the end of this class, you will be cool as a cucumber and hot as a pepper as you tell your stories. You'll tell touching lovely heartbreaking stories. You'll tell funny as heck stories. You'll tell jaw-dropping stories. You'll tell stories to rock the socks off your audience.
So, come to class! Come rock their socks off!
