New Love in My Life

There is a new love in my life and I am just bursting to tell you about it. Writing and audio have been my tried and true mediums for telling stories for the last ten or so years. Now I am pleased to welcome a new member to the family: Video.

I have been getting to know video for about six years. I dabbled in a few multimedia projects. I’ve always suspected I would like making videos, so I took a leap. In early August I spent a week in Portland, Maine to take a documentary film workshop in the newly merged Salt Institute for Documentary Studies at MECA.

It was the most intense week of my life! My mission: film and edit a three-minute documentary film in only five days – oh, and learn how it’s done too. I edited by night and filmed by day. I was running on just a few hours of sleep the last few days. I enlisted my fellow workshop students in a round of midnight jumping jacks to get the blood flowing and keep our energy levels up. I was a powerhouse of enthusiasm ready to take on the world!

By luck and good connections, I found an incredible story to delve into and an inspiring young person to tell it. His name is Iggy Parker and he is a transgender circus artist. In the video Iggy talks about the struggles he encountered before his gender transition and his dreams of becoming a circus artist.

The workshop is over. I’ve made a bunch of new friends and connections. I’ve returned to my home in beautiful Midcoast Maine and I’m back at work on memoir books and audio. So, what does having this new passion mean for my work and business? I’m still sorting out the details, but I am planning to continue developing my documentary video skills. I already have a few video projects in discussion with potential clients, so it looks like this could be the beginning of a beautiful new thing.

A number of people have asked me if I will continue my personal history work. The answer is yes. I love working one-on-one with storytellers on their memoirs. Books and audio are both great mediums for going in-depth into the past. Video will allow me to tell stories that are happening in the present. I'm also excited about working with new kinds of clients such as small businesses, non-profits, and finding many beautiful/powerful/fun/transformative stories out in the great wide world.

So, here’s to love and new beginnings!

Cheers,

Meghan
