Resume

My story work over the last 11 years has taken an array of forms – audio, writing, documentary, oral history, books, blogging, and video – all with the intent to tell compelling real-life stories that help us better understand.

EXPERIENCE

Owner, Oral Historian & Producer (Apr 2013 – present) Stories To Tell, Hope, ME

Stories To Tell is a self-publishing company that helps families and organizations turn their real life stories and history into books and audio productions using oral history and documentary methods.

  • After a few people approached me to help them document their personal stories I realized I could apply my skills to help families as well as organizations tell their stories – thus began my business.
  • Marketing my business is also about connecting through stories. I write a blog and newsletter, give presentations, teach, and master the social media scene. When I engage with the public my goals are to be authentic, entertain, inspire, and inform. I’m repeatedly told I am an excellent public speaker.
  • After serving 44 clients and working on over 50 projects in the last four years, with the support of a team of trusty subcontractors, I’ve finally found that sweet spot of managing my business on a part-time basis. This has opened up more of my time and energy, which I’d like to devote to new kinds of story opportunities and making an impact in the world in different ways.

Freelance Media Producer & Writer (2006 – present)

I write and produce freelance audio and video productions.

  • My radio work has aired on the BBC, MPBN, The Moth Radio Hour, WERU, AARP radio, Re-Sound, and stations across the US as well as Ireland. I’ve written for the Island Journal, Working Waterfront, and Maine Boats, Homes, and Harbors.
  • My short video documentary about a transgender circus performer, Trans Circus, toured the state in the 2017 Maine Short Film Festival.
  • In 2012 I traveled to Nepal to produce Untouchable Love, a live multimedia show I toured around Maine, about a marriage between a high caste woman and an “Untouchable” or dalit
  • My radio documentary about a friend’s experience with bipolar, Is That My Imagination?, was a winner in the 2008 Third Coast Audio Festival Short Docs.

Solar Marketing & Office Manager (Jan 2011 – Mar 2013) ReVision Energy, LLC, Liberty, ME

ReVision Energy is a solar installation company serving New England. I was brought in to fill the role of the office and marketing manager while she went on maternity leave. When she returned part-time, I stayed on an additional year to focus on marketing, delving into my favorite aspects: event planning, building media relationships, designing marketing materials, and writing for the company newsletter.

Historical Documentation Island Fellow (Nov 2009 – Sept 2011) Island Institute, Swan’s Island, ME

After a 2009 fire destroyed the Swan’s Island library and historical collection, I was brought on as an Island Institute Fellow to help the community to re-document their island history and direct the Swan’s Island Memory Project.

  • I worked independently and collaboratively with the community to record 36 oral history interviews with island elders. I turned 44 hours of recordings into 33 short audio and multimedia documentaries. The community was hungry for their stories, which we played at events, exhibits, online, and radio. During one event the large hall was filled to capacity and a few people even listened from outside.
  • Meetings had lapsed and membership was low after the fire. I helped revive and grow the membership and volunteer base. I trained volunteers in oral history and photo digitization.
  • During the second year of my fellowship I wrote Guts, Feathers and All: Stories of Hard Work and Good Times on Swan’s Island, Maine, and even had it done in time for summer fundraising.

Documentary Instructor (Fall 2008 & 2009) Brown Ledge Gap Year, Colchester, VT

The Brown Ledge Gap-Year program was a semester-long gap-year program focused on community service, documentary film, radio, and photography. The school’s founder, Timothy Shuker-Haines, recruited me to teach radio documentary classes and serve as a mentor.

Radio Production Intern (Nov 2008 – Jan 2009) World Vision Report, virtual office

World Vision Report was a public radio show focused on world poverty and justice issues. Their editor, Leda Hartman, met me at a conference and asked me to produce a series of audio book reviews.

Research Assistant (Jan – July 2007) Amaze Design, Boston, MA

Amaze Design works with museums to design spaces for learning. I was hired as an independent contractor to provide in-depth historical research and write exhibit text for the National Park Service’s African Burial Ground Interpretive Center in lower Manhattan.

VOLUNTEER WORK

Midcoast Magnet board member (2015-2016) Camden, ME

Mini-Maker Faire Committee (2015-2016) Camden, ME

Volunteer Fundraiser (Spring 2015) “Eat for Nepal”

  • After two major earthquakes hit Nepal I dedicated a solid month to fundraising, convinced 19 local restaurants to participate in “Eat for Nepal,” and gave presentations at local libraries. We raised over $11,000 for the Nepal Youth Foundation to provide children with education, health, shelter, and freedom from slavery.
